About Those Report Cards . . .

This isn’t the week for a detailed examination of Ohio’s accountability system; but this is a good time to comment on last week’s posting of the state report cards and the anticipated drop in grades. Continue reading “About Those Report Cards . . .”

Superintendent Search Continues

The #1 statutory responsibility of the State Board of Education is to hire the Superintendent of Public Instruction, a task given special importance by the circumstances under which former Superintendent Richard A. Ross retired in December. Continue reading “Superintendent Search Continues”

ESSA and ODE

Last week’s State Board of Education provided plenty of items worthy of comment. For this week, I’ll limit myself to one: the kickoff of ODE’s plans to implement the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Continue reading “ESSA and ODE”

About the Contrarian

I’ve enjoyed two marvelous careers: first as a teacher of English and theatre (and, occasionally, psychology); and second as executive director of the North Eastern Ohio Education Association (NEOEA).

But I’ve always had other interests: public policy, parliamentary procedure, union leadership, music, genealogy, and photography. Since retiring in 2017, I’ve focused on those interests.

As is perhaps obvious, I’m still figuring out what I want to be when I grow up.
